Opening Keynote: Dr. Malu Celli Closing Keynote: Bob McDonald

Dr. Malu Celli is a biologist who joined the Calgary Zoo to help transform their Animal Department. Her career spans almost 25 years, from researcher to filmmaker, animal trainer and zookeeper, across five continents.  Passionate about wildlife and traveling, she traded the urban jungle of Sao Paulo, Brazil, where she was born, to the dwindling rainforests of Guinea, West Africa - where she saw firsthand the impact of education on species conservation.

Dr Celli earned a masters and doctorate in Science from Kyoto University, but chose to go beyond academia. To connect people with nature, she explored producing wildlife documentaries in Japan and Namibia, and dedicated the last 14 years to engaging zoo guests in the UK and now Canada. Today she is responsible for the welfare of gorillas, giraffes, penguins and 200 other animals, and collaborates with other professionals across the world to improve animal care and develop the role of zoos.

She is actively involved in supporting various conservation activities, including education and public awareness to the importance of wildlife conservation.

Bob McDonald is one of Canada’s best known science journalists, bringing science to the public for more than 40 years. In addition to hosting Quirks & Quarks, the award-winning science program that is heard by 500,000 people each week, McDonald is also science correspondent for CBC TV’s The National and host and writer of the children’s series Head’s Up.
